Q1 and Q2 in review, upcoming events on the calendar

Our calendar gets so full that it’s always helpful to take time half-way through the year to glance back at Southern California Contractors Association accomplishments to date, review Q1 and Q2 and then take a peek at what lay ahead for the rest of 2019.

Looking back at Q1

We started out by setting our sights on the future. On January 16, SCCA held the annual January Economic Forecast with featured speaker John Husing, PhD., a research economist who has specialized in the study of Southern California’s growing economy since 1964. More than 100 attendees learned the U.S. economy is humming, but “recession in 2010 a growing possibility.” If you missed it or you were there and want to refresh your memory, you can watch a video of the presentation on the SCCA website at sccaweb.org/page/University.

Right after President’s Day, we had our own land of linkin’, hosting the 6thannual Meacham Memorial Golf Tournament on February 21. As it does every year, the event sold out in just a few days. The capacity crowd enjoyed a fun-filled day of golf on Pelican Hill’s Club’s North Course. We again extend a sincere thank you to all the volunteers and generous sponsors who made this tournament such a success.

Safety took center stage as 28 SCCA members received Excellence in Accident Prevention Awards at this year’s Safety Awards Banquet in March. At this year’s event, held at the Phoenix Club, Health and Safety Expert Richard McElhany gave a moving and eye-opening presentation about the importance of companies taking the extra time to ensure proper documentation is completed and keeping employees from cutting corners that could result in serious injury or even death.

Congratulations again to Larry Pim and the SCCA Safety Committee for their efforts in raising awareness of the importance of this event, which resulted in a record registration of 167 and a significant increase in the number of companies that received the award this year.

Gatherings highlight Q2

The spring brought the second PAC Shootout Fundraiser. Held on April 17, this sporting clay shooting event at Mike Haahugue’s Shooting Enterprises in Corona had 15 shooting stations varying in degrees of difficulty from easy to hard. Thus, both expert and novice shooters could join in the fun. The event helped raise more than $20,000 for the PAC. These contributions are being put to good use with both state and local elected officials and candidates. Remember, any and all PAC donations of any amount are welcomed throughout the year.

On May 8, SCCA Members and guests convened at the Near Valley Meeting at the Monterey Hill Restaurant in Monterey Park. With keynote speakers Abbigail Brown of CPM Logistics and Brian Boudreau of L.A. Metro, we learned about opportunities and ways to get involved in L.A. Metro projects.

More than 100 people participated in the Membership Summer Kick-Off on June 12. This is one of the biggest events of the year when event members can have some fun, mingle with peers, enjoy food drinks and festivities. It was a great way to make connections, learn more about SCCA and network. Not yet a member or know a friend who should join in? Register now!

More to come

Throughout the year SCCA has a number of other ways to get together with others in the industry. Want to know all the great things in store for Q3 and Q4? Take a look at our upcoming events, save the dates, mark your calendar, get your tickets and join in.
