Industry leads traveled from across the United States and began to gather in San Diego, California for the upcoming September 10-13 convention. The convention, organized by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (SCCA’s national affiliate), was being held at the beautiful Lodge at Torrey Pines.

Following the ARTBA convention, John Gasparo (2023 SCCA President) was elected by his peers as Second Vice President of the Contractors Division for the coming year. John will serve with President Jeff Parisi of Parisi | A Walbec Company, based in Wisconsin, and First Vice President Dave Smith of Mount Construction, based in New Jersey. John’s key focus resides in advocating for federal funding and/or policies that impact contractors throughout the United States.

SCCA was a Double Platinum sponsor and host of the convention, which drew in many familiar industry names. NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton (pictured) gave the keynote remarks.

On September 12, 2023, SCCA also became the first Association to host the Caltrans Liaison meetings with multiple associations in attendance. These key players included the Associated General Contractors (AGC) and United Contractors (UCON).

The meeting commenced at 1:00pm that afternoon where the associations had equal opportunity to exchange words and ideas with Ray Hopkins and Ray Tritt from Caltrans. The meeting concluded at 3:00pm and was followed by a combined dinner, held at Roy’s Restaurant in Anaheim, California. Many members from all listed associations attended that evening’s festivities, bringing the day to a positive and productive close.
